“Stand by Me” was originally recorded in 1961 by American singer-songwriter Ben E. King. The title is derived from and inspired by a spiritual written by Sam Cooke and J.W. Alexander called “Stand by Me Father”. The second line of the second verse of “Stand By Me” is from Psalm 46:2c/3c.
Ben E. King first offered it to his group, The Drifters, but was told – “Not a bad song, but we don’t need it.” However, after he became a solo act, he took the song to Jerry Lieber.
“I showed him the song. Did it on piano a little bit, he called the musicians back into the studio, and we went ahead and recorded it.”
